For some time the Iris was the only newspaper in Sheffield, but beyond the ability to produce fairly creditable articles from week to week, Montgomery was devoid of the journalistic skills that would have allowed him to take full advantage of his position. The process allowed illustrations to more closely resemble the original drawings, paintings or sketches, as it gave the lithographer a freedom of line impossible to achieve in earlier intaglio and relief processes.
