Annie Get Your Gun is a stage adaptation of a current hit at a time when MGM was recycling older Broadway material in musical-biographies, or doing what it did best, concocting its own cinematically-based original hits. There's something to be said for a bit of healthy competition, but director George Sidney heaps on more than you might be bargaining for in this slow but entertaining musical. Why, Colonel Buffalo Bill, of course! The main male character in the play is Frank Butler — he's one of the shooters, participating the show. Pippa Ailion was the Casting Director for this production.

Will Annie sacrifice her pride and her reputation to win back Frank's heart? The two Garland numbers are almost painful to watch. Typically overlooking the egregious Merman for the screen version, Arthur Freed secured the rights for Judy Garland, who was recovering from another bout of the mental fragility that had been exacerbated by her addiction to pills. In those outtakes she seems even more energetic and spirited than when the camera's rolling.
